Shifting Pulse (2021)

Shifting Pulse is a work that uses rhythm as its core element and consistently plays with the concept of time. While the tempo remains unchanged throughout, the perception of the pulse shifts frequently. The work’s rhythmic drive allows for continual exploration of different shifts until we finally reach a steady pulse at the climax, signaled by a soaring melody. There are two themes that were used to create the entire piece: an odd meter, rising melody, first heard at the violin’s entrance, and the interval of a major second heard in the piece’s seemingly pulseless bookends, portrayed by the flute and clarinet. These ideas were developed into multiple sections, which were constructed using different characteristics of the themes’ melodic and rhythmic content. This can be heard in the frequent interjections, sequences, and conversational elements between instruments.
